CACFP Records or Food Loss due by Flooding
September 11th, 2025
Flooding can cause major damage to child care centers and food programs, including the loss of records and food contamination. It is important to be aware of guidelines for both CACFP recordkeeping and food safety during a flood.
CACFP records must be kept for three years plus the current year. If your records are damaged in a flood, save a copy of your insurance claim showing the loss. This will serve as proof of the damage for regulatory requirements. Contact your assigned Nutrition Program Consultant for further guidance.
Food Safety Tips
- Stay Out of Floodwater: Floodwater may contain dangerous sewage and chemicals. Avoid walking or driving through it.
- Wear Protective Gear: Use boots and gloves when cleaning up to reduce contamination risks.
- Dispose of Contaminated Food: Throw away any food, drinks, or medicine exposed to floodwater, as well as packages that are wet or damaged.
- Sanitize Everything: Clean dishes, utensils, and surfaces that came into contact with floodwater.
By following these guidelines, you can help ensure the safety of both your records and the food you serve, reducing risks to the health and safety of those in your care. Stay safe, and remember: when in doubt, throw it out!
