Serving Milk

August 12th, 2011

In order for the CACFP rules to be in alignment with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, fluid milk served to children two years of age and older must be fat-free or low-fat milk (1% or less). Whole milk and reduced-fat milk (2%) may not be served to children two years of age and older. This change was effective May 2011.

In certain cases non-dairy beverages may be served in place of fluid milk with the proper documentation. Non-dairy beverages must be nutritionally equivalent to milk and meet the nutritional standards for fortification of calcium, protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, and other nutrients to levels found in cow's milk, as outlined in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) regulations at CFR 210.10 (m)(3).

In addition, parents or guardians may now request in writing non-dairy milk substitutions, as described above, without providing a medical statement, although a written request must be provided and it must identify the medical or other dietary needs which requires a non-dairy milk substitution. In these cases providers have the option of providing the requested non-dairy substitution or not.

Requirements for children under the age of two have not changed.
